How to prepare for a tax relief call

A private, organized checklist for calling Republic Tax about IRS debt, including questions about fees and representation.

You do not need a perfect file to have an initial conversation. You do need a concise description of the problem, the most recent letter, and a few questions that protect your decision-making.

Create a one-minute summary

Use this format: “I received [notice name] for [tax year]. The letter shows [approximate balance], and the next date listed is [date]. I have [filed or missing] returns. My main concern is [payment, disputed balance, collection, or records].”

Keep estimates labeled as estimates. If you are unsure of the total balance, say so. Start with the information you can verify rather than reconstructing everything from memory during the call.

Keep a small call folder nearby

  • Your newest IRS notice and any earlier deadline letter.
  • A list of filed and missing tax years.
  • A rough monthly household budget.
  • A record of previous payment arrangements.
  • A blank page for names, fees, and next actions.

Do not email Social Security numbers, full returns, or banking credentials through an unverified channel. Ask how sensitive documents are handled if you choose to engage a provider. Never give another person your IRS account password.

Evaluate the offer of paid help

Ask who would represent you, whether the scope includes preparing missing returns, and what happens if the initial recommendation changes. Clarify whether quoted fees are for investigation, a specific application, or ongoing work.

The IRS recognizes a right to retain representation. That does not mean every person answering an intake call can practice before the IRS; ask about the professional assigned to your case. IRS Taxpayer Bill of Rights ↗

Before ending the conversation, request the next steps in writing where available. Take time to read any agreement. Calls using this website connect directly to Republic Tax, a separate provider; no IRS outcome or program eligibility is guaranteed here.

Three questions to take with you

  • Who will handle my case and communicate with me?
  • What services and fees are included?
  • What must I do while you review the issue?
